INDIGENOUS LEARNING INSTITUTE

Indigenous Learning Institute (ILI) is a small non-profit based in Benguet, Philippines that aims to equip Igorot Indigenous Peoples with the competence and life skills they need to thrive in a global world, using the strengths and values embedded in their culture. Ili in Igorot language means home or the land of one’s birth, believed to be the source of identity, belonging and direction of its people.

ILI's founder, Digna Adonis, is an Igorot woman who was born and raised in a small village in the town of Tuba. Despite poverty and lack of access to opportunities, Digna finished college, a postgraduate degree and worked abroad with the help of elders, mentors, various organizations and her adherence to Igorot values and discipline.  Digna now lives in the US but she is serving back her community through ILI’s program of Igorot culture preservation and rejuvenation. Founding ILI is Digna’s way of saying “THANK YOU” to all who helped her achieve her goals. Amidst modernity that is rapidly changing Igorot Indigenous life and communities, Digna believes that preserving what is left of the culture and values will strengthen Igorots, especially young people, to live with purpose in their own communities while also thriving within the mainstream society.

Since 2014, ILI has published language learning books and conducted Igorot culture documentation, traditional music, dance and cultural trainings for schools in the far flung areas of Benguet. With the increasing interest of  young people to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of their culture and identity, ILI hopes to reach out to more village schools  in the Cordillera Region and continue to create positive impact to about 650 youth, their families and the community.

Your support will allow ILI to deliver cultural trainings and related activities to empower more Igorot young people in remote village schools in Benguet. We also welcome support in the form of training materials, resources sharing, and volunteering.
