Integración Lógica Matemática
Integración Lógica Matemática (ILM) is a Mexican non-profit organization with a structured system that detects, nurtures and supports talented math students.
ILM currently detects 5th and 6th grade talented students, especially from public schools, through an in person state math competition, and it is working on an online platform to use for detection by 2019. ILM nurtures these students with a 4-year program1 free of charge in which ILM provides them with diverse opportunities such as summer programs, weekly trainings and support outside of math education so they can have more opportunities for the future. ILM supports their students by creating a community run by students for students. After the 4-year program ILM’s students become members of the organization who support the new generations. Their new roles as members become teaching and mentoring new students in the different programs offered by ILM.
Cuauhtémoc’s pathway changed 10 years ago when a young teacher came to his classroom to invite him to participate in math Olympiads. The teacher offered him two weeks of math training free of charge. Since Cuauhtémoc liked math, it sounded interesting, and most importantly, because it was free he joined the math training and participated in the math state competition at the end of the two weeks. Unexpectedly, Cuauhtémoc won a first place in the state. However, he was the only public school student among the winners. When competing for nationals, he realized that his math capabilities were not as good as other private school students. However, that was not because he was not as smart as them, but rather because he did not have the resources nor the opportunities they had. This did not let him down, at the contrary he went to many private schools asking if he could join their math clubs, but all of them told him no. He did not give up, and with the help of his family, he got a small loan to pay for a math club, but he did not find any in his whole city. Therefore, Cuauhtémoc ended up attending an affordable math college test prep school where at least he could ask his math problem questions. After two months of attending this school and working hard by himself, Cuauhtémoc was one of the two students to represent his state in the national competition in 2008. For the next three years, he participated in national and international competitions and thanks to the skills he developed in math Olympiads, Cuauhtémoc received a full scholarship to attend an international high school called United World College in New Mexico, USA. After graduating from high school, he received a full scholarship at Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota.
Cuauhtémoc founded Integración Lógica Matemática (ILM) because he knows the lack of support and opportunities for public school students, furthermore, he knows what they are capable of and what they can achieve if ILM provides them with just one opportunity.
ILM needs $13,945 to continue to offer free support and opportunities to underserved, talented math students in Mexico. With your support, we can reach 740 public school students and help them to achieve their full potential and change the path of their lives.
